Chiropractic for Dancers by a Dancer

I love how well chiropractic and pole dancing fit into my life together. During the day, I am a chiropractor out of my private practice, Peapod Family Chiropractic. Here, I specialize in the neurologically based chiropractic care of infants, individuals on their pregnancy journey (fertility-postpartum), and families.

As both my practice and pole dancing progressed, I started to realize how similar a dancer's spine is to a postpartum spine- we all tend to have hypermobility in the lumbar spine, restriction in the thoracic spine, difficulty engaging lower abs, and certain areas of instability/imbalance. Being aware of these things and applying my chiropractic education allowed me to advance my pole dancing career more efficiently. I soon realized there was an entire population that could greatly benefit from chiropractic care, and who better to provide that than someone who is familiar with the craft?

How Pole Dancers & Aerialists Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care

  • Nervous System Balance - Chiropractic is about honoring the normal healing capabilities of your body. Your brain has to communicate to your body, and your body has to give feedback about the environment back to your brain (super important in pole!). This happens via your spinal cord and nerves (which leave the spinal cord between your vertebrae). When tension and stress build up in the spine, it creates interference and overloads the nerve or nerves nearby, creating what is known as a subluxation. This subluxation acts similar to a blown fuse in your house. When a fuse blows in your home, certain areas or appliances may not function until that power is restored. Similarly, by finding and correcting any subluxations in your spine, specific chiropractic adjustments help restore power and function to those parts of the body. While chiropractic doesn't treat or cure symptoms, many people experience symptom relief as a side effect of an efficiently functioning nervous system.

  • Body Balance - Now now, I know. We all train both sides all the time and we're perfectly balanced and using our muscles evenly, right? ;) The reality is, most of us have a "favorite side". Even as a chiropractor and knowing better, I can tell you my aerial inverts on my left side are trash. Over time, this uneven training can lead to uneven musculoskeletal patterns. Our nervous system starts to wire that imbalance as being "normal". Over time, this can lead to asymmetrical pressure on joints and can lead to faster deterioration/breakdown. The goal is to keep the dancers that love to dance dancing as long as possible.

  • Mobility - Limited mobility can prevent you from being able to do certain moves. Most commonly, when I see dancers saying they have decreased shoulder mobility, it's fixation in the thoracic spine. Similarly, If certain areas of your spine are hypermobile, it can be just as much of a challenge. Hypermobility, especially if you're unaware of it, has a higher potential for injury. Adjustments can help keep joints movable that need to be, and not give the body the need for other joints to be hypermobile.
